However, the stone carvers of this region are facing a grave challenge these days as the Government has imposed a ban on quarrying in the hills. Now the artisans have to buy pink stone imported from Keonjhar district of Orissa. This adds more difficulty to their livelihood. The cost of carrying the stones from Orissa to a distant place like Bankura district of West Bengal has become economically unviable. Day by day, many stone carving artisans are leaving this craft and going to other places in search of other jobs.
