    • Processing: The grass (Cyperus tegetum) grows to a height of 4 to 5 feet. It is cut in September-¬October, after the monsoon rains, and is then dried in the sun, usually for three to four days. Generally each strand of grass, about 2 mm in thickness, is cut into three strands with a needle. The mats are woven on a simple bamboo¬ frame loom. Finely woven mats have 40 threads (Jute Sutlis) in the nine inches that comprise an average hand span; while less fine mats have 18 threads worked into the nine inches that comprise an average hand span. Three kinds of Madur mats are woven, the thick (and more comfortable) Doroknu (with a double Madur kathi), the more simple (and thinner) Ekrokha; and the very fine¬ textured Masland. Occasionally, natural dyes, made of Mehndi leaves and other local plants are also used to apply different colors in it.
    • Quality Control: There are stringent quality checks at every stage of production process. Every product is routed through Earthen Living regional office to allow the quality experts to check the quality of each product to meet the defined standard. Even the quality experts visit local sellers' production houses without any notice to check the condition of production process. That lady has specialised in household articles, like Table mats, Mat rolls, Letter holders, Water bottle bags and various other useful items, made from Madur-kathi. She uses only natural Madur Kathi (Cyperus tegetum) as raw material sourced from local market. She has been awarded by President of India for her craftsmanship. Ms. Samanta attends various district craft fairs in west Bengal to sell her creation for living. She also travelled distant parts of India exhibiting her beautiful products. Ms. Parul Samanta was born in a remote village of West Midnapore, West Bengal. She has one son in her family. After acquiring the degree from the college her son used to help her in this handicraft job besides doing a part time job in one government organization.
